Use these to say how you feel at the funfair.


2.1 Basic feeling words

2.2 Useful patterns


1. I feel + adjective.

3. Giving Your Opinions


Use these to say what you think about rides, games and funfairs.


3.1 Opinion starters

3.2 Saying something is good / bad

- I think the queue is too long.

3.3 Softening opinions (sounds more polite)

3.4 Using Comparatives to Give Opinions


Use comparative adjectives to compare two things.  

Basic rule:  

- short adjectives: adj + -er + than 

  - tall → taller than  

  - fast → faster than  

- longer adjectives: more + adjective + than

  - exciting → more exciting than  

  - comfortable → more comfortable than  


Some irregular forms:  

- good → better than 

- bad → worse than


Form:

- … is adj-er than …  

- … is more / less + adjective than …


Funfair examples


- I think roller coasters are more exciting than Ferris wheels.  

- In my opinion, Ferris wheels are safer than roller coasters.  

- For me, bumper cars are better than spinning rides.  

- I think the games are more expensive than the rides.  

- The music is louder than at the cinema.  

- This funfair is bigger than the one in my town.

4.1 Basic patterns

4.2 Comparing preferences


Use to and than to compare:


- I prefer bumper cars to the roller coaster.  

- I’d rather eat ice cream than eat a hot dog.


4.3 Using Comparatives to Explain Preferences


Use comparatives to give a reason for your preferences:


- I prefer Ferris wheels because they are safer than roller coasters.  

- I like bumper cars because they are more fun than the carousel.  

- I’d rather eat popcorn than hot dogs because it is cheaper than a hot dog.  

- I prefer watching fireworks because it is more relaxing than going on rides.  

- I love candyfloss. It’s sweeter than popcorn.


4.4 Funfair examples


- I like bumper cars, but I don’t like spinning rides.  

- I love candyfloss, but I hate toffee apples.  

- I prefer the Ferris wheel to the roller coaster because it is slower and safer than the roller coaster.  

- I’d rather watch the fireworks than go on another ride. Fireworks are more beautiful than the rides.

5. Useful Phrases for Invitations and Responses


At a funfair you often invite friends to do things and respond with feelings, opinions and preferences.


5.1 Inviting someone


- Do you want to go on the Ferris wheel?  

- Would you like to try this game?  

- Let’s get some popcorn.  

- How about the bumper cars?


5.2 Saying yes


- Yes, I’d love to.  

- Sure, sounds great.  

- Okay, let’s go.  

- That’s a good idea.


5.3 Saying no (with a reason / preference, using comparatives)


- I’m sorry, I don’t like roller coasters. They’re scarier than Ferris wheels.  

- No thanks, I prefer the Ferris wheel. It’s more relaxing than the roller coaster.  

- I’d rather eat something. Food is more interesting than this ride for me.  

- Maybe later. I feel a bit more tired than before.
