The Passive Voice in English


The passive voice in English is formed when the focus of the sentence is on the action or the recipient of the action, not on who or what is performing the action.


**Basic Structure of Passive Voice:**

- **Form**: be + past participle of the main verb

- **General formula**: Subject + Auxiliary Verb (be) + the 3rd form of the main verb (Past Participle) + by + Agent


**Present Tense**


**Simple Present**

- **Active**: The chef cooks the meal.

- **Passive**: The meal is cooked by the chef.


**Present Continuous**

- **Active**: The chef is cooking the meal.

- **Passive**: The meal is being cooked by the chef.


**Past Tense**


**Simple Past**

- **Active**: The chef cooked the meal.

- **Passive**: The meal was cooked by the chef.


**Past Continuous**

- **Active**: The chef was cooking the meal.

- **Passive**: The meal was being cooked by the chef.


**Future Tense**


**Simple Future**

- **Active**: The chef will cook the meal.

- **Passive**: The meal will be cooked by the chef.


**Perfect Tenses**


**Present Perfect**

- **Active**: The chef has cooked the meal.

- **Passive**: The meal has been cooked by the chef.


**Past Perfect**

- **Active**: The chef had cooked the meal.

- **Passive**: The meal had been cooked by the chef.


**Future Perfect**

- **Active**: The chef will have cooked the meal.

- **Passive**: The meal will have been cooked by the chef.


**Modals**


With modals like can, could, should, etc., the structure also includes the modal verb.


- **Active**: The chef can cook the meal.

- **Passive**: The meal can be cooked by the chef.


**Practice Sentences for Conversion:**


1. **Active**: Researchers are investigating the phenomenon.

    - **Passive**: The phenomenon is being investigated by researchers.

    

2. **Active**: The committee will announce the decision tomorrow.

    - **Passive**: The decision will be announced by the committee tomorrow.


3. **Active**: The teacher had corrected the essays by noon.

    - **Passive**: The essays had been corrected by the teacher by noon.

**Instructions:**

Read the active sentence provided and rewrite it in the passive voice. Remember the basic formula for the passive voice: Subject + Auxiliary Verb (be) + Main Verb (Past Participle) + (by + Agent).
