1. Past Continuous Tense Nedir?

Past Continuous:

Geçmişte belli bir anda devam etmekte olan (süren) eylemleri anlatmak için kullanılır.

Türkçedeki karşılığı:  

“–yordu / –mekteydi / –yor idi”

Örnekler

- The lions were sleeping in the sun.

  → Aslanlar güneşte uyuyordu.  

- The birds were flying over the river. 

  → Kuşlar nehrin üzerinde uçuyordu.  

- A man was watching the birds from the bridge.

  → Bir adam kuşları köprüden izliyordu.  

- The children were feeding the ducks by the lake.

  → Çocuklar göl kenarında ördekleri besliyorlardı.

2. Cümle Yapısı (Olumlu – Olumsuz – Soru)

A) Olumlu Cümle  

Kalıp:

- I / He / She / It + was + V-ing

- You / We / They + were + V-ing

V-ing: fiile “–ing” eklenmiş hali (eating, running, flying…)

Örnekler:

- The monkey was climbing the tree.  

  Maymun ağaca tırmanıyordu.

- They were watching the elephants near the river. 

  Onlar nehrin yakınındaki filleri izliyorlardı.

- The crocodile was waiting in the water. 

  Timsah suda bekliyordu.

- The birds were singing in the forest.  

  Kuşlar ormanda şarkı söylüyorlardı.

- A boy was taking photos of the birds.  

  Bir çocuk kuşların fotoğrafını çekiyordu.

- The hikers were walking quietly in the forest.

  Yürüyüşçüler ormanda sessizce yürüyorlardı.

- The ranger was checking the animals in the park.

  Görevli (bekçi), parktaki hayvanları kontrol ediyordu.

B) Olumsuz Cümle  

Kalıp:

- I / He / She / It + was not (wasn’t) + V-ing

- You / We / They + were not (weren’t) + V-ing

Örnekler:

- The tiger wasn’t hunting at midnight. 

  Kaplan gece yarısında avlanmıyordu.

- The bears weren’t sleeping in the cave.  

  Ayılar mağarada uyumuyorlardı.

- The birds weren’t flying; they were sitting in the tree.

  Kuşlar uçmuyorlardı; ağaçta oturuyorlardı.

- The campers weren’t making noise in the forest.

  Kampçılar ormanda gürültü yapmıyorlardı.

- The girl wasn’t feeding the animals; she was just watching them. 

  Kız hayvanları beslemiyordu; sadece onları izliyordu.

C) Soru Cümlesi  

Yes/No questions (Evet/Hayır soruları):

- Was + I / he / she / it + V-ing?

- Were + you / we / they + V-ing?

Örnekler:

- Was the lion sleeping under the tree?

  Aslan ağacın altında uyuyor muydu?

- Were the monkeys playing in the jungle? 

  Maymunlar ormanda oyun oynuyorlar mıydı?

- Was the man watching the birds?

  Adam kuşları izliyor muydu?

- Were the children playing near the river? 

  Çocuklar nehrin yakınında oyun oynuyorlar mıydı?

Kısa cevaplar:

- Yes, he was. / No, he wasn’t. 

- Yes, they were. / No, they weren’t

3. Past Continuous Ne Zaman Kullanılır?

1) Geçmişte belli bir anda devam eden iş  

> O anda ne oluyordu?

- At 5 p.m., the elephants were drinking water at the river.

  Saat 5’te filler ne yapıyorlardı? Nehirde su içiyorlardı.

- Yesterday at noon, the birds were flying over the lake.

  Dün öğlen kuşlar gölün üzerinde uçuyorlardı.

- At 6 p.m., a group of students were watching the sunset in the mountains. 

  Saat 6’da bir grup öğrenci dağlarda gün batımını izliyordu.

- Last weekend, my family was walking in the forest.

  Geçen hafta sonu ailem ormanda yürüyordu.

2) Geçmişte uzun süren eylem + kısa eylem (simple past)  

Genellikle: Past Continuous + when + Past Simple

- The deer was drinking water when it heard a noise.

  Bir ses duyduğunda geyik su içiyordu.

- The birds were building a nest when it started to rain.

  Yağmur yağmaya başladığında kuşlar yuva yapıyordu.

- We were hiking in the forest when we saw a wild boar.

  Bir yaban domuzu gördüğümüzde biz ormanda yürüyüş yapıyorduk.

- The children were playing near the lake when their teacher called them. 

  Öğretmenleri onları çağırdığında çocuklar gölün yakınında oyun oynuyordu.

 

Burada:  

- uzun süren eylem: was/were + V-ing  

- kısa/ani eylem: V2 (past simple)

3) Aynı anda olan iki uzun eylem (past continuous + past continuous)

- The monkeys were playing while the crocodile was waiting in the river.  

  Timsah nehirde beklerken maymunlar oyun oynuyordu, 

- The tourists were taking photos while the birds were flying over the waterfall.  

  Kuşlar şelalenin üzerinde uçarken, turistler fotoğraf çekiyordu.

4. Fiillere “-ing” Eklenmesi (Kısaca)

- Genel: play → playing, watch → watching, jump → jumping  

- e ile bitenler: live → living, write → writing (e düşer)  

- Kısa tek heceli, sonu ünsüzle biten: run → running, swim → swimming (son harf iki kez yazılır)

5. Tema ile Örnek Cümleler

- The wolves were howling in the forest at midnight.  

- The owls were hunting small animals in the dark.

- The rabbits were hiding under the bushes. 

- The giraffes were eating leaves from tall trees.  

- The penguins were walking on the ice.  

- The bees were flying around the flowers. 

- The children were picking up rubbish in the park.

- A photographer was waiting quietly for the tiger. 

- Two friends were camping near the river.  

- The ranger was helping an injured bird.
