Infinitive of Purpose
Bu dersimizde kamu binaları hakkında bir parça okuyacak ve insanların bu yerlere ne amaçla (purpose: amaç) gittiğinden bahsedeceğiz.
Why sorusuna “to” infinitive ile yanıt vereceğiz. (to infinitive: to + fiilin yalın hali - to study, to borrow gibi)
Örneğin: Bu gençler niçin kütüphaneye gidiyor?
Why do those young people go to the library?
To study and do homework. / Ders çalışmak ve ödev yapmak için.
To borrow books. / Kitap ödünç almak için.

PUBLIC BUILDINGS
There are many public buildings in a town. People go to these buildings for different reasons.
The library is a quiet place. People go to the library to read books and magazines. They can borrow books and take them home. Students go there to study and do homework. Many libraries also have computers and free Wi‑Fi.
The post office is a place where people send letters and parcels. They can buy stamps and envelopes. People also pay some bills at the post office. It is an important building for communication.
The town hall is the center of local government. The mayor and other workers have offices there. People go to the town hall to ask questions about the town, to get forms, or to register important events, like a marriage.
The hospital is a very important building. People go there when they are sick or hurt. Doctors and nurses work in the hospital. They help people to get better. There is also a smaller building called a clinic, where people go for simple health problems.
The police station is where police officers work. People go there to report a crime or to ask for help. The police help keep the town safe.
The museum is a place where people can see old and interesting things. They can learn about the history of the town or the country. Families and school classes often visit the museum.
All these public buildings help people in the town. They give important services and make life easier and safer for everyone.

Infinitive of Purpose
1. What is the infinitive of purpose?
We use “to + verb” to say why we do something.
- go + to + verb
- come + to + verb
- visit + to + verb, etc.
This is called the infinitive of purpose.
2. Form
- to + base verb
Examples of base verbs:
go, read, send, pay, study, ask, get, register, report, learn
Infinitive of purpose:
to read, to send, to pay, to study, to ask, to get, to register, to report, to learn
3. Examples from the reading
From the passage:
- People go to the library to read books and magazines.
→ Why do they go? To read.
- Students go there to study and do homework.
→ Why do they go? To study.
- People go to the post office to send letters and parcels.
→ Why do they go? To send letters and parcels.
- People go to the town hall to ask questions about the town.
→ Why do they go? To ask questions.
- People go to the town hall to get forms.

4. How to make your own sentences
Use this pattern:
- People go to + place + to + verb (reason).
Examples:
- People go to the library to borrow books.
- People go to the hospital to see a doctor.
- People go to the museum to see old things.

1. Difference between “for” and “to” for purpose
Both can express purpose, but they are used in different structures.
A. “for” + noun / -ing
Use for when it is followed by:
- a noun
- I went to the shop for milk.
- This brush is for the bathroom.
- a verb in -ing form (gerund)
- This button is for opening the door.
- A pen is for writing.
Structure:
- for + noun
- for + verb-ing
You cannot say:
- ✗ I went to the shop for buy milk.
(because after “for” you don’t use the base form of the verb)
B. “to” + base verb (infinitive)
Use to when it is followed by a verb in base form:
- I went to the shop to buy milk.
- She called me to ask a question.
- He studies hard to get good grades.
Structure:
- to + verb (infinitive)
You cannot say:
- ✗ I went to the shop to milk.
(if you mean the purpose is buying milk, you need “to buy milk” or “for milk”)
