Walking on Snow

Walking on Snow

I like walking on snow because it changes the whole world into something softer and quieter. Every step makes a crisp, satisfying crunch that you don’t get on any other surface. The air feels sharper and cleaner, and the light reflects off the ground so everything seems brighter, even on a cloudy day. I like leaving footprints behind me—this little trail that proves I was there, knowing the next snowfall will erase it. There’s also a calm that comes with it; sounds are muffled, streets are slower, and it feels like time has eased up a bit just so you can enjoy the moment of walking through the cold, bright stillness.

Study the vocabulary

1. crisp – pleasantly fresh, cool, and sharp (describing the feel of the air or the sound/texture of the snow).

The air was crisp as we stepped outside into the snowy morning.

2. crunch – a firm, crackling sound made when something is pressed or stepped on (like snow underfoot).

I could hear the crunch of the snow under my boots with every step.

3. satisfying – giving a pleasant, contented feeling; emotionally or physically pleasing.

It was satisfying to look back and see the neat line of footprints behind us.

4. trail – a line of marks or footprints left behind as someone moves.

Our footprints made a winding trail across the white field.

5. ease up – to slow down, become less intense, or relax.

As the storm began to ease up, the snowfall turned light and gentle.

6. prove – to show or demonstrate that something is true (the footprints show you were there).

The deep footprints prove that someone walked through here last night.

7. erase – to remove or wipe out so that it disappears (the new snow will cover and remove the footprints).

By morning, the fresh snow would erase every trace of our trail.

8. muffled (adjective) – (of a sound) not loud or clear, usually because something is blocking or covering it.

We heard muffled voices through the closed door and couldn’t make out what they were saying.
